{"id":40373,"date":"2024-08-21T14:39:10","date_gmt":"2024-08-21T14:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/americanorchestras.org\/?page_id=40373"},"modified":"2024-09-30T21:24:24","modified_gmt":"2024-09-30T21:24:24","slug":"taking-another-listen","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/americanorchestras.org\/learn\/resources-data-and-research\/data-partnerships\/slover-linett\/taking-another-listen\/","title":{"rendered":"Taking Another Listen"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An important report issued by Slover Linett in partnership with the League,&nbsp;\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/sloverlinett.com\/insights\/taking-another-listen-classical-music-radio-research-with-people-of-color\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Taking Another Listen: Audience Research With People of Color To Help Make Classical Music Radio More Welcoming<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d&nbsp;offers new ways of viewing longstanding audience-diversity challenges in classical music, and suggests specific ways of presenting this music to make it more welcoming for audiences of color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the study was commissioned and funded by&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/king.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Classical King FM<\/strong><\/a>, Seattle\u2019s classical public-radio station, its in-depth approach produced findings relevant to the entire classical music field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research partnerships like this help us bring you additional opportunities to take part in orchestra-specific research that goes beyond the surveys and research projects run by the League itself. In this case, the collaboration created an invaluable opportunity to identify actions that orchestras and other classical music presenters can take to make the music they perform more inclusive and welcoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js is-open\" data-initially-open=\"true\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-403730\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\"><strong>League Insights<\/strong><\/h2><div id=\"ac-403730\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p><strong>Three new lenses:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Americans of all major racial and ethnic groups listen to classical music at roughly similar rates, countering longstanding assumptions in the field that classical music is enjoyed largely by White Americans.<\/strong>&nbsp;Moreover, most people (of all races and ethnicities) have either neutral or positive perceptions of classical music \u2014 even those who don\u2019t listen to it, and few feel that there\u2019s a cultural barrier to their enjoyment of classical music. For most people of color, the barrier isn\u2019t that they don\u2019t see classical music as part of their culture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>As other studies have also shown, classical music is an interest for only a minority of people in each racial and ethnic group. Those who do listen to classical music \u2013 and especially younger listeners &#8211; tend to listen to a wide variety of other genres of music, too.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>There is little agreement on what constitutes \u201cclassical music,\u201d and many people define that term narrowly. <\/strong>Most people (again, across racial and ethnic groups) tend to categorize any music played by an orchestra or on the piano as \u201cclassical music,\u201d though many people excluded movie soundtracks and instrumental music composed in the last 10 years from their definition of classical music<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Directions for change:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bring classical music to where people are.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>YouTube and streaming services are important ways that people of color (especially younger people) connect with music. These platforms offer orchestras an opportunity to broaden engagement, since many people of color (across all racial and ethnic groups) say they would use YouTube to give classical music a try.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many people of color \u2013 and young people in particular \u2013 also think that seeing classical music live might increase their interest in classical music, especially if this experience was a social one, undertaken with friends.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Highlight classical\u2019s evolution beyond its White, European origins<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>While many people of color don\u2019t need to see their identities represented in classical music in order to enjoy it, many do see classical as stuck in the past. A more contemporary \u2014 and historically accurate \u2014 picture of classical would highlight the past and present contributions to the art form by people from a wide range of backgrounds and geographies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diversity and representation within the creation of the music is important for many people as a signal of welcome and respect, especially for Black audiences. In addition, a lack of audience diversity in a communal or public classical space \u2014 like an orchestra concert \u2014 could be taken as a signal that it\u2019s exclusionary, while seeing signs that a shared space respects multiple cultural heritages can be a signal of welcome and inclusion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Highlight classical music\u2019s relevance by emphasizing its contemporary connections.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Audiences may need to see clearer connections between classical music and contemporary culture, in order to find it relevant to their own lives. So, in addition to showcasing stories about historical artists in their time, programming needs to highlight how classical music is relevant to the current moment and in dialogue with the world of today.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Around one quarter of people in each racial and ethnic group is interested in learning about how a piece has impacted or inspired others, and \/ or in understanding how a classical piece has played a role in film, TV, gaming, comedy, sports, or other modern contexts.&nbsp; Similar proportions said that understanding hidden connections with modern music of other genres might help them enjoy a piece of classical music.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Learn from people\u2019s favorite hosts.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The study\u2019s insights into radio hosts are relevant to orchestras considering the role of the Executive Director or Music Director in verbally welcoming audiences into the experience [or \u201cto the hall\u201d]. The working group also included the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/americanorchestras.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>League of American Orchestras<\/strong><\/a>, and additional perspectives were provided throughout the project by an advisory group of four innovators working at the intersection of classical music, racial equity, and media engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slover Linett&nbsp;began the project by conducting open-ended interviews with 24 people of color living in Seattle, New York City, Oklahoma City, and Philadelphia, none of whom listened to the classical radio station in their city.
