{"id":45379,"date":"2025-10-16T13:23:45","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T13:23:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/americanorchestras.org\/?p=45379"},"modified":"2025-10-16T13:23:47","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T13:23:47","slug":"power-of-inclusion-ten-characteristics-of-inclusive-orchestras","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/americanorchestras.org\/power-of-inclusion-ten-characteristics-of-inclusive-orchestras\/","title":{"rendered":"Power of Inclusion &#8211; 10 Characteristics of Inclusive Orchestras"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Inclusion Index results show that many U.S. orchestras are making real progress in building more positive, inclusive organizational cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, others have yet to establish the kind of inclusive environment that fully supports their goals. As in the broader arts and culture sector<sup><strong><a href=\"#1\">1<\/a><\/strong><\/sup>, this work can be especially challenging for larger-budget organizations with larger staff teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our research shows that those musicians and staff reporting an inclusive organizational culture typically work for orchestras with some of the following characteristics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. A strong sense of internal community, with musicians, staff, and board acting as one toward the mission<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A commitment to inclusion and belonging<\/strong> articulated in a strategic plan or values statement, holding the institution accountable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Board leadership support<\/strong> <strong>for a welcoming community<\/strong>, and participation in the life of the orchestra<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Alignment of internal and external identities<\/strong>, rooting inclusive culture in an orchestra\u2019s role in its community<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gatherings of orchestra, staff, and board<\/strong> in settings both business and social<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Engagement and onboarding for new staff and musicians<\/strong> to pass along the orchestra\u2019s workplace culture\u2014especially for those whose backgrounds might make them feel different<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Safety in sharing thoughts, ideas, and disagreements<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Forums for dialogue about institutional issues<\/strong>, both public and through private channels, enabling people to voice concerns in ways that are comfortable for them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Role modeling,<\/strong> at every level of management and by the music director, the commitment to transparency and psychological safety<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Care for musicians and staff that makes each person feel individually seen and supported<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A history of caring, <\/strong>which for some orchestras has meant maintaining employment and insurance straight through the pandemic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Leadership presence<\/strong> at rehearsals, performances, community events, and throughout the office<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Flexibility with work hours<\/strong> to optimize satisfaction and retention among mission-driven staff<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Contractual services <\/strong>for training, discussion of institutional issues, and content of interest to musicians\u2019 personal and professional lives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Collaboration across functions<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Working groups tackling big questions,<\/strong> mixing musicians, staff, and board<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sharing the challenges and processes of musicians and various staff <\/strong>through written channels and in-person activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Professional advancement opportunities for staff and musicians<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Regular performance reviews for staff<\/strong> that provide clear expectations and guide towards goals for personal growth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Financial support for staff members\u2019 professional development<\/strong> and mentoring toward expanded roles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Flexibility for musicians with external performance opportunities<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Respect and recognition for musicians and staff<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Celebration of special accomplishments<\/strong>\u2014and not only for department heads or section leaders\u2014like solos, community work, or successful revenue generation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Events to recognize important anniversaries and retirements<\/strong> for staff as well as orchestra<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Respectful audition and tenure communications and procedures<\/strong> built on clear communication and a supportive experience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Accountability at all levels<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Orientation or training for staff and for orchestra section leaders<\/strong> that inculcates the orchestra\u2019s commitment to a welcoming, respectful culture, and makes training for organizational skills available<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dealing with interpersonal and workplace issues<\/strong> quickly and with compassion, allowing all to be heard, and heading off larger problems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Communication to overcome silos and promote transparency<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Regular written communications<\/strong> that make staff and musicians aware of the <em>how<\/em> and the <em>why<\/em> as well as the <em>what<\/em>, along with news both good and not-so-good<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Empowerment and agency for musicians and staff<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Opportunities for musicians to provide programing ideas,<\/strong> create or participate in community initiatives, or see their input realized in other meaningful ways<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Openness to staff input on how goals can be reached,<\/strong> and how administrative tasks are carried out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10.
