Building Public Support: A ToolKit for Orchestras  <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The stakes have never been higher for America\u2019s nonprofit orchestras to effectively convey how they are serving their communities. Today\u2019s philanthropic and public decision-makers want to see and understand how orchestras are meeting the needs of all residents of their local communities. Funders and governments are all making tough choices about how to allocate scarce resources. Economic impact arguments are not enough and are not unique to the arts. And while artistic excellence is fundamental to our work, it is no longer sufficient to generate widespread community support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To earn wholehearted community support, orchestras need to act and communicate in new ways. And while there are some actions that can be taken in the near term, changing public perception will require a long-term commitment involving everyone in the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resources in this Toolkit will help orchestras to meet this critical public value communications challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The PowerPoint<\/a><\/strong> (PDF) is an entry point, and provides a context for understanding the issues around public value.<\/li>
  2. The Self-Survey<\/a><\/strong> (PDF) will help you think about and discuss your orchestra’s public value strengths and weaknesses and the actions you may wish to take.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
    Changing Your Communications<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
    1. Refer to the Message Framework<\/a><\/strong> (PDF) to understand four major ways that orchestras meet public needs, and the key points to communicate about each.<\/li>
    2. The most effective communications tools are data and stories. Use the Data Template<\/a><\/strong> (PDF) to collect the data that is relevant to your orchestra’s work in meeting public needs. The Storytelling Guidelines<\/a><\/strong> (PDF) describe best practices for sharing stories that will show the impact your orchestra is having on the lives of citizens.<\/li>
    3. Mapping<\/a><\/strong> your public value is a way to provide a new picture of the work your orchestra does in the community. The breadth of your orchestra’s engagement is displayed powerfully in a set of maps and accompanying lists that show the number, variety, and geographic spread of the schools, community, and business partners with which you interact.
